BERKELEY, Calif. -- Sacramento State dropped a pair of matches on the first day of the Battle of the Bay at the Clark Kerr Sand Courts. The Hornets fell to both ninth-ranked Cal, 5-0, and UC Davis, 3-2.
The losses dropped the Hornets to 3-3 on the young season. Cal, which has endured a grueling schedule thus far, improved to 2-4. The Aggies are now 2-3.
The Battle of the Bay is a two-day beach event that will see the Hornets play two more matches tomorrow in San Jose against both Santa Clara (noon) and San Jose State (2 p.m.). Sacramento State opened the season last week in Salem, Ore., at the Corban Invitational.

Aurora Bibolotti won in three sets at No. 1 (21-19, 12-21, 18-16), and

Ashlynn Archer won at No. 2 by a 22-20, 22-24, 15-13 score.
The Hornets lost in straight sets at the Nos. 3-5 spots to the Aggies. Each of the doubles matches against Cal were finished in straight sets.
