SALEM, Ore. -- Sacramento State split a pair of matches, falling to Corban, 4-1, before defeating Southern Oregon, 3-2, on Saturday morning.

With the split, Sacramento State improved to 3-1 on the young season. All four matches were part of the season-opening Corban Invitational. The Hornets began the tournament, yesterday with victories over Portland and Chaminade.

Today's opponents were both NAIA members, but Corban is ranked second in the nation, and Southern Oregon is ranked fourth in the country.

Sacramento State's No. 4 team of Kate Doorn/Mia Guevara went 2-0 today, beating their Corban opponent in straight sets, before winning in three against Southern Oregon.

In the victory over Southern Oregon, besides the Doorn/Guevara outcome, Sacramento State also got wins from Ashlynn Archer/Reese Ampi at No. 2, and Charlee Lepp/Abbey Kadillak at No. 5. The match at No. 5 clinched the victory as Lepp/Kadillak were victorious, 16-21, 28-26, 15-7. The duo was trailing late in the second set before coming back to win.

The Hornets used the same lineup Nos. 1-4 in both matches today, while switching things up at No. 5.

Sacramento State is back in action next week when it competes at Battle of the Bay on Friday-Saturday in the Bay Area. That includes a pair of matchups Friday in Berkeley against Cal (10 a.m.) and UC Davis (noon). The Hornets will also play Saturday in San Jose vs. both Santa Clara (noon) and San Jose State (2 p.m.).
