WOMEN’S TENNIS RANKED FIFTH IN FINAL ITA REGIONAL POLL

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — After a season that saw the Sacramento State women's tennis team claim its second straight Big Sky Conference Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth, the Hornets found themselves standing among the region's best teams, ending the spring ranked No. 5 in the Northwest Region according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Associations final poll.

The Hornets, who entered the ITA's national rankings for the first time since 2015 and reached as high as No. 49 in the country, improved five spots on last year's season-ending regional ranking after finishing No. 10 in the Northwest Region following the 2024 campaign.

This season, Sacramento State posted a 2-1 record against schools ranked in the final Northwest Region poll, posting wins over No. 7 Fresno State and No. 10 Portland, while falling to No. 2 California in a first-round NCAA Tournament match-up.

Outside the region, the Hornets also faced the No. 9 (Cal Poly) and No. 10 (Long Beach State) teams in the Southwest Region poll, and the No. 3 (Nevada), No. 4 (Northern Arizona), and No. 10 (Idaho) teams in the final Mountain Region rankings.

Sacramento State wrapped up the 2025 spring season with a 21-4 overall record and a 7-1 mark in Big Sky play, finishing second in the regular season before shutting out both third-seeded Idaho and top-seeded Northern Arizona in the conference tournament. This season's 21 victories were the most by a Hornet squad since the 2008 team finished 21-7 and, coupled with the 20 wins in 2024, gave the program back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 2004 (23-4) and 2005 (23-5).

After claiming its 13th Big Sky Tournament title in school history — the most in the history of the league — Sacramento State made its 15th NCAA Tournament appearance as the No. 3 seed in Seattle, Wash., falling to Bay Area rival Cal in the first round for the second consecutive year.

Individually, six Hornets earned All-Big Sky honors following the regular season as senior Maddy Ferreros and Big Sky Tournament MVP Reese Walker were first-team selections in singles, sophomore Lou Baudouin was a second-team honoree, and sophomore Elena Mercioiu were named to the honorable mention squad.

In doubles, Baudouin and Emilija Pranyte were selected to the second team while Walker and Palina Saulevich were honorable mention choices.
