MORAGA, Calif. -- Sacramento State's torrid offense continued to mash, scoring 14 runs on 15 hits in a 14-3 road win at Saint Mary's on Tuesday afternoon at Cottrell Field.
That's two five-inning mercy rule road victories in the last three days as the Hornets smashed UC Davis on Sunday by a 10-2 score. Today, Sacramento State continued to roll, batting .484 (15-for-31) with five doubles, two home runs, three stolen bases, 14 RBIs, an .839 slugging percentage and .529 on-base percentage.
In the second inning alone, the Hornets scored nine times on 11 hits and sent 14 batters to the plate. All the team's runs were scored over two innings, including the nine-run second and a five-run third. Nine different Hornets had hits in the game, and six had RBIs.
Sacramento State improve to 12-8, and defeated Saint Mary's (8-10) for the second time this season. The Gaels are the defending West Coast Conference champions.
As a team, the Hornets are now hitting .322 with 28 home runs, a .565 slugging percentage, .400 on-base percentage and .965 ops. Sacramento State, which entered the day ranked 21st in the nation in home runs, is already more than halfway to its school record total of 55 (set in 2022).
Highlighting today's second-inning run parade was an
Andrea Lira grand slam, RBI-singles from
Alexa Carino, Lafalafu Malepeai and
Malissa George, and an RBI-double from
Shannon Garcia. In the third,
Madison Evers-Lyles hit a three-run homer, and Garcia had a two-run double.
Evers-Lyles' home run was her fifth in just 27 at-bats, and the Lira blast gives her four homers and a team-best 22 RBIs. Garcia went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs, and Carino 3-for-4 with two runs, a double and an RBI.
Junior
Kennedie Magorian tossed a complete game, allowing just two hits and three runs (two earned) with four strikeouts over five innings.
The Hornets have a tough schedule later this week, including a pair of matchups against 6th-ranked UCLA, and a game at San Diego State (receiving votes in the top 25 poll). On Friday, the team will play at UCLA, before traveling to San Diego on Saturday to take on San Diego State and UCLA for the second time.
