LOS ANGELES -- Despite home runs from
Shannon Garcia,
Andrea Lira and
Madison Evers-Lyles, Sacramento State fell at 6th-ranked UCLA, 12-4, on Friday evening at Easton Stadium.
Sacramento State, which now has 31 home runs this season, dropped to 12-9 with the loss. The nationally ranked Bruins improved to 20-4 overall and 5-0 at home.
The Hornets, who rank among the top 20 teams in the country in home runs, improved that total this evening. In fact, the home runs came against a pair of UCLA pitchers that entered the game with a combined 66 strikeouts in 41 innings. Perhaps even more impressive is two Hornets that homered are true freshmen (Garcia, Evers-Lyles).
Sacramento State's round trippers came on a solo shot from Garcia in the third inning, a two-run blast from Lira (scoring
Lafulafu Malepeai) in the fourth, and a solo shot from Evers-Lyles in the sixth. Those home runs accounted for three of the Hornets' four hits as
Katie Marsh went 1-for-3. Hitting streaks continued for Evers-Lyles (7 games), Garcia (6 games) and Marsh (5 games).
UCLA, which ranks among the top 10 teams in the country in numerous offensive categories, scored in five different innings, including crooked numbers in the first (2), second (4), fourth (2) and sixth (3) innings. The game was stopped after six innings because of the mercy rule.
The schedule doesn't get any easier tomorrow when the Hornets travel to San Diego for matchups at San Diego State (noon) and UCLA (2:30 p.m.). San Diego State is currently receiving votes in the top 25 poll.
