LA JOLLA, Calif. — Zach Matzke and
Max Thomas each shot 74 to lead the Sacramento State men's golf team in the final round of the UC San Diego Invitational on Tuesday at Torrey Pines GC. The Hornets, which entered the day in first place, could not withstand the third-round charge from New Mexico State, Arkansas State and UC Irvine and finished in fourth place.

NMSU was 5-under par as a team during the final round and finished two-shots clear of the field to win the team title. The Aggies totaled 301-301-283-885 and were followed by Arkansas State (887) which was 1-over during the final round. UCI edged Sacramento State by one stroke to take third place. The Hornets completed the tournament at 303-290-299-892.

Matzke and Thomas both used eagles to spark their rounds. Matzke's eagle on the 615-yard, par-5 ninth hole was his lone under-par hole during the round. He added 13 pars and four bogeys. Overall, he shot 76-79-74-229 to tie for 45
th place.

Thomas started on the second hole and parred his first four holes of the day. He then played the next 11 holes at 2-over par with just one par in the stretch. He began with a birdie on the par-4 sixth before double bogeying the par-4 seventh. Bogeys on Nos. 8 and 9 were followed by a birdie on the par-4 10
th. After a par, he bogeyed No. 12, eagled the par-5 13
th and bogeyed Nos. 14 and 15. He closed the run with a birdie on the par-3 16
th and then parred his final three holes. The freshman tied for 14
th overall at 75-75-74-224.

Luke Dugger shot 75 in the final round and tied for 14
th overall. Dugger had three birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey in the round. His finish was his fourth top 15 showing this season and third in a row.

Zach Mate and
Jake Aberle each shot 76 to complete the team total. Mate tied for 10
th overall with rounds of 73-73-76-222. He had four birdiessix bogeys and a double bogey during the final round. Aberle provided two birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey on his way to tying for 45
th place.

Arkansas State's Thomas Schmidt was the medalist after shooting 71-68-72-211 to finish at 5-under. Schmidt finished six strokes ahead of Seattle U's Kevin Li who placed second.

Sacramento State will next compete at the SeattleU Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay GC on Mar. 31-Apr. 1.
