LOYOLA MARYMOUNT OVERCOMES 7TH INNING DEFICIT, DEFEATS SOFTBALL, 5-4

SACRAMENTO -- Loyola Marymount scored four times in the seventh, including three with two outs, and eventually defeated Sacramento State, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

The Lions trailed, 3-1, heading to the seventh inning, but connected for four runs and four hits in the frame, highlighted by Sakora Harvell's two-out, three-run double. The ball barely sailed over the outstretched arm of Hornet left fielder Avery Brown, and all three runners aboard came around to score.

Trailing, 5-3, in the bottom of the seventh, the Hornets had runners at second and third with no outs, but pushed across just one run (Madison Evers-Lyles sacrifice fly).

The Lions won their sixth straight game while improving to 14-17. LMU won all three games of the series by three runs or less, including 6-3 and 6-4 yesterday. Sacramento State dropped to 13-15, and will now turn its attention to Big Sky Conference play, which begins next week at home vs. Idaho State on Friday-Saturday.

Sacramento State had 2-0 leads in all three games of the series, but Loyola Marymount came back to win each time.

Hornet starting pitcher Caroline Evans was dealing early, allowing just two hits without a walk and three strikeouts over three innings. However, Evans was pulled from the game after three for an injury precaution. The Lions would score once in the fourth, and had just the one run and eight hits through six innings. Sacramento State turned three double plays to help keep LMU to just the single run. That included right fielder Andrea Lira throwing out a Lion runner at the plate in the fourth inning.

Sacramento State scored once in the second and third inning to take a 2-0 lead. That included a sacrifice fly from Lafulafu Malepeai that was hit deep enough into center field allowing the speedy Faith Epperson to score all the way from second base. In the third, Lira's RBI-double scored Evers-Lyles. Sacramento State increased its lead to 3-1 in the sixth when Malepeai singled home Karissa Avila.

Nikki Barboza collected another two hits, and was retired just twice during the entire series. Malepeai went 2-for-2, and Lira was 1-for-3. That extended Lira's hitting streak to nine games, as the junior has hit safely in all but five games this season. Evers-Lyles saw her 13-game hitting streak come to an end as she was 0-for-2 with a walk, run and sacrifice fly.

The Hornets and Idaho State will play a doubleheader on Friday at noon, followed by a single game on Saturday at noon.
