SOFTBALL OPENS BIG SKY PLAY; DROPS A PAIR TO IDAHO STATE

SACRAMENTO -- Idaho State outscored the Hornets, 16-1, while sweeping a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The Bengals won the first game, 7-1, before taking the nightcap, 9-0.

The doubleheader was the Big Sky Conference opener for both teams, and they will play the third game of the series tomorrow afternoon at noon at Shea Stadium.

The Bengals improved to 21-12 overall and 2-0 in the Big Sky, while the Hornets dropped to 13-17 and 0-2 in league.

Idaho State had 18 hits - 16 of which were singles. The Bengals had an abundance of soft contact hits, but No. 3 hitter Ava Brown provided plenty of muscle with two home runs and six RBIs over two games. Brown had Idaho State's only two extra base hits, and both of those round trippers came in Game 2.

Sacramento State held a brief 1-0 lead in the second inning of the opener after Malissa George crushed her third home run of the season - an 0-2 pitch she sent over the left-center field wall. However, that was the only scoring of the day against Idaho State starting pitchers Lizzy Tommasini and Kasey Aguinaga.

Sacramento State had 10 hits over two games from eight different players. Andrea Lira was the only Hornet to have a hit in both contests, and extended her hitting streak to a career-high 11 games. Lafulafu Malepeai had a pair of hits in the nightcap.

The Hornets had a number of hard hit balls this afternoon, but many of them found Idaho State gloves. That included three balls that were caught on the warning track in right field.

Sacramento State had solid relief outings from Kyndal Williams in Game 2 (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 K), and Alexa Ortiz in Game 1 (1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R).

The Hornets will look to avoid their first-ever 0-3 start in Big Sky play. The league's first year of softball was 2013.
