EVANS AND ORTIZ SHINE IN THE CIRCLE; SOFTBALL DOWNS IDAHO STATE, 2-1

SACRAMENTO -- Caroline Evans (4.0 IP) and Alexa Ortiz (3.0 IP) combined to allow just one run and six hits to lead Sacramento State to a 2-1 victory over Idaho State on Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

The Hornets, who never trailed, earned their first Big Sky Conference win. Sacramento State, which dropped a pair to the Bengals yesterday, improved to 14-17 overall and 1-2 in the Big Sky. Idaho State dropped to 21-13 and 2-1 in league.

Evans (5-5) earned the win, allowing just four hits and one run with three strikeouts over the first four innings of the game. Ortiz picked up her second save, yielding two hits with three strikeouts over the final three shutout frames.

Ortiz was in the circle during perhaps the biggest play of the game. With the Hornets leading, 2-1, Idaho State loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth. Ortiz, however, got Belle Navarrete to ground into a 1-2-3 double play, and two pitches later, got out of the inning by recording the final out.

Sacramento State scored runs in the first and second innings, comprised of a Malissa George two-out, RBI-single scoring Katie Marsh in the first, and a wild pitch allowing Nikki Barboza to score in the second. The Hornets outhit the Bengals, 7-6, and both teams had other chances to score. That included Idaho State stranding seven runners on base.

Both George and Evans had two hits, and the pair combined for over half the Hornet hits. Evans had a double in the sixth inning. Andrea Lira had a fifth-inning single, improving her hitting streak to a career-high 12 games. Lafulafu Malepeai and Addy Buckley also had hits.

Idaho State scored its lone run in the third inning on back-to-back extra base hits, but the combination of Evans and Ortiz held the Bengals scoreless the final four innings.

Today marked the finale of an eight-game homestand. Sacramento State will play four times on the road next week, including Tuesday at Pacific (4 p.m.) and a three-game series at Portland State on Friday-Saturday.
