SOFTBALL SCORES FOUR TIMES IN THE 5TH, BUT NOT ENOUGH IN LOSS TO BYU

SACRAMENTO -- BYU took advantage of four Hornet errors and a number of other defensive misplays on the way to a 9-4 victory over Sacramento State on Thursday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

Sacramento State's defense did not do the pitching staff any favors as five of the Cougars' nine runs were unearned. And though the Hornets were charged with four errors, there were more than a handful of other plays that could have been made.

Sacramento State (9-6) is in the midst of a stretch that will see the team play five home games over a four-day stretch. That began yesterday with a 6-5 win over UC Davis, and will continue tomorrow vs. Nevada at 2:30 p.m.

The Hornets used 20 players in today's game, highlighted by Madison Evers-Lyles hitting her first collegiate home run, and Jessica Szelenyi notching her first collegiate hit. The Evers-Lyles blast was a two-run no-doubter that easily cleared the left field fence and was part of a four-run fifth inning.

Of Sacramento State's six hits, four were collected by Hornets that did not begin the game in the starting lineup. That includes Evers-Lyles, Szelenyi, Alexa Carino and Addy Buckley. Carino and Avery Brown both had doubles.

BYU (10-4) scored runs in the second (1), third (3), fourth (3) and fifth (2) innings.

Kennedie Magorian, Alexa Ortiz and Danyelle Leone pitched for the Hornets. Leone allowed just a hit and no runs in two innings of work.

The game vs. Nevada is part of the three-day Capital Classic that begins tomorrow and runs through Sunday. The Hornets will host games on Friday and Saturday, while UC Davis will host games on Sunday.
