SACRAMENTO -- True freshman Madison Evers-Lyles launched her third home run, but that was the lone highlight for the Hornets in a 6-1 loss to Nevada on Friday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

Today marked the first day of the Capital Classic, and three games were on the slate. UC Riverside beat Santa Clara, 4-3, in the morning game, and Nevada defeated Santa Clara, 2-1, in Game 2. There are three more games on the schedule tomorrow, and Sacramento State will play two of them at noon and 2:30 p.m.

Playing for the third straight day at home, Sacramento State (9-7) got the early jump on the Wolf Pack with a second-inning solo blast from Evers-Lyles. The home run was a shot that cleared the left field fence by about 70 feet. The true freshman now has three home runs in her first 13 collegiate at-bats.

However, Nevada scored twice in the third, fifth and seventh innings. Of the Wolf Pack's six runs, two were unearned. Caroline Evans worked the first 5.1 innings, and Alexa Ortiz the final 1.2 innings.

Both Shannon Garcia and Lafulafu Malepeai had doubles. Malepeai's double just missed being a home, as it hit two feet below the top of the fence. That double followed Evers-Lyles' homer, as it was nearly back-to-back blasts. Andrea Lira had the Hornets' other hit as Sacramento State finished with four against Nevada pitchers Ainsley Berlingeri (2-0) and Hailey McLean (2nd save).

Tomorrow, the Hornets play Santa Clara at noon, and Nevada at 2:30 p.m. The Capital Classic concludes on Sunday when the Hornets play a road game at UC Davis at 2:30 p.m.
