OGDEN, Utah -- Senior
Jacob Holt beat the shot clock buzzer with a huge 3-pointer late in the contest to help deliver an 80-77 road win at Weber State on Thursday evening at Dee Events Center.
Sacramento State led for 35 minutes of clock while shooting 55% (29-53) from the field and 52% (15-29) from the 3-point line. The 15 3-balls were the Hornets' most against a Div. I opponent this season, and they also had a 32-25 rebounding advantage.
Weber State's last lead (47-45) came at the 16:41 mark, but the Hornets responded with a 6-0 run and led the final 16:18 of clock. However, that second half lead was never more than seven points despite Sacramento State shooting 61% (14-23) after halftime, including 8-of-13 from distance.
A 5-0 Wildcat run had Weber State within, 76-75, with 1:11 to play. On the Hornets' next possession, Sacramento State was able to take 35 seconds off the clock, aided by a diving
Bailey Nunn offensive rebound. With three second on the shot clock, Nunn inbounded to Holt, who hit a dagger 3-ball with a hand in his face to give the Hornets a 79-75 lead with 36 seconds remaining.
Defensively, Sacramento State (7-20, 3-11) got a couple stops, and an eventual Nunn free throw with four seconds left had the Hornets up five. Weber State (9-19, 3-11) hit a meaningless bucket with two seconds to play to provide the final score.
Sacramento State, which had a 14-0 run early in the first half, went into halftime with a 40-37 lead. The Hornets had just 24 points in the paint and went 7-for-15 from the free throw line, but that didn't matter because of the 15 makes from deep.
That included a career-high five 3-pointers from both Holt and
Lachlan Brewer. Holt was 5-of-9 from distance while Brewer went 5-for-6. Four different Hornets set or matched season/career bests tonight. That included Holt finishing with 27 points and career-high tying 13 rebounds. He has now posted 13 boards in back-to-back games, secured his sixth double-double of the season, and ninth 20+ point game.
Brewer, a true freshman, set his career best with 17 points on a very proficient shooting line of 6-of-7 from the field and 5-for-6 from deep.
Emil Skytta had a season-high 14 points (one shy of career best) to go with three rebounds and three assists. Nunn, who missed the previous two games with injury, came back to post a season-high tying seven assists (just one turnover) and a game-best +15 in plus/minus.
Weber State also shot well - 53% (31-59) from the field and 41% (9-22) from the 3-point line - but it was not enough to overcome Sacramento State's torrid shooting. The two teams combined to turn the ball over just 18 times.
Sacramento State, still without starters
Alex Kovatchev and
Julian Vaughns, used an eight-man rotation, and each of those players scored. That included eight points and three blocks from
Chudi Dioramma, six points (2-4 3FG) and four boards from
Michael Wilson, three points and two steals from
EJ Neal, and a pair of points from
Leo Ricketts.
The Hornets, who have just four games remaining in the regular season, are back in action Saturday at Idaho State. Tip is 5 p.m. PT. The Big Sky Conference Tournament in Boise is just around the corner - March 8-12. The Hornets will open the single-elimination tournament on Saturday, March 8.
