MATE, DUGGER FINISH FIRST DAY OF ORANGE COUNTRY CLASSIC EVEN

Men's golf in seventh place heading into final round

COTO DE CAZA, Calif. — Luke Dugger and Zach Mate each were even par during the opening two rounds of the Van Harte Orange County Collegiate Classic on Monday at Coto de Caza Country Club.
 
In the first round, Mate was even and Dugger finished at 1-over to lead the team. Mate opened the round with birdies on three of his first four holes as well as a bogey on the other. He then parred Nos. 2-8 to stay at 2-under until a bogey on the par-4 ninth. After two pars, he birdied the par-5 12th to get back to 2-under par but found himself even after a double bogey on the par-4 13th.
 
Dugger was 2-under through four holes after birdies on Nos. 17 and 18. A double bogey on the par-5 third was followed by five consecutive pars. Dugger dropped back below par with a birdie on the par-4 ninth only to bogey Nos. 10 and 11.
 
Zachary Matzke and Max Thomas each shot 77 to complete the team total. Matzke had four birdies, five bogeys and a pair of double bogeys in his opening round. Thomas was 8-over through his first 11 holes before birdying Nos. 10, 12 and 13. He ended the round with four birdies, a bogey, a double bogey and two triple bogeys.
 
Dugger and Mate reversed scores in the second round and the pair are tied for sixth place at even par. Dugger was 3-over through his first five holes of the afternoon but rallied behind birdies on Nos. 2, 5, 6 and 7 to get to 1-under. Bogeys on Nos. 9 and 10 temporarily placed him at 1-over before he birdied the par-4 11th and par-5 12th.
 
Mate birdied three of his first five holes and then played his final 13 holes at 3-over with three bogeys. The duo six strokes back of St. John's Peicheng Chen  who holds the individual lead.
 
Matzke ranked third on the team and is 35th overall. His second round featured a birdie and five bogeys. Thomas added an 81 in the second round and is tied for 46th place. Thomas had two birdies, a bogey, two double bogeys and a triple bogey.
 
UC Riverside holds the team lead at 1-over par. The Highlanders are followed by Cal State Fullerton (3-over), UC Irvine (9-over), UC Santa Barbara (16-over) and Gonzaga (20-over) in the top five. Sacramento State finished the first day at 23-over and is seventh.
 
The final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
