SACRAMENTO -- Sophomore outside hitter
Victoria Marthaler and senior middle blocker
Ashlynn Archer were named the Big Sky Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.
The duo helped lead Sacramento State to a pair of home victories over Montana (3-2) and Montana State (3-0). It also allowed the Hornets (11-8, 4-3) to begin a season-long four-match homestand in winning fashion.
For Marthaler, it marked her second player of the week award in three weeks. Archer has now won both sides of the weekly honor as she earned the offensive award on Sept. 22.
Marthaler had 52 kills over two matches, averaging a massive 6.50 kills per set to go with a .311 hitting percentage. She accounted for nearly half the Hornet kills (105) during the week, hit above .300 in both matches, had 17 more kills than any player in the Montana match, and eight more kills than any player in the Montana State match.
That included a career-high tying 33 kills vs. Montana where she had kills on each of the Hornets' final five points of a 15-13 fifth set win over the Grizzlies. It marked her second straight match with 33 kills (33 last Saturday at NAU), and she became the first Hornet in 30 years to garner back-to-back 30 kill matches. The Albuquerque, N.M., native also hit .307. In the victory over Montana State, she registered 19 kills with a .341 hitting percentage.
Archer averaged 1.38 blocks per set during the week, which included five blocks vs. Montana, and six vs. Montana State. Both of those outputs were match highs, and Archer was a catalyst in limiting the Bobcats to just a .169 hitting percentage. If her defense wasn't enough, the St. John, Wash., native also hit .439 during the week with 2.63 kills per set.
Sacramento State completes its homestand this week with matchups on Thursday vs. Idaho at 7 p.m., and Eastern Washington on Saturday at 1 p.m. Thursday's match marks the midway point of the conference season.
