SACRAMENTO -- Sophomore
Victoria Marthaler connected on a career-high 33 kills for the second straight match to lead Sacramento State to a reverse sweep of Montana, 3-2 (22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19, 15-13) on Thursday evening at the Nest.
Marthaler also had 33 kills on Saturday at Northern Arizona, and becomes the first Hornet in 30 years with back-to-back 30+ kill matches. She is the first since Jill Haas accomplished the feat in 1995 (Haas would later be named second team All-American that season).
Its not just the 33 kills thats impresses, but Marthaler came up clutch in the fifth set. She had seven kills in that fifth frame, and accounted for kills on each of the team's final five points of the set. That included a kill on 14-13 of the fifth to deliver the Hornets an important victory. In fact, she combined for 15 kills over the final two sets. One of the top outside hitters in the country, she is now averaging a ridiculous 6.04 kills per set in Big Sky Conference play.
Tonight opened a season-long four-match homestand, and the Hornets improved to 10-8 overall and 3-3 in the Big Sky. Sacramento State, which was coming off a pair of road losses last week, improved to 71-12 at the Nest vs. conference competition since 2015.
Montana, winners of 11 of its previous 13 matches, dropped to 11-6 and 3-3 in league. Tonight's Hornet win also avenged a loss to the Grizzlies in Missoula to open conference play on Sept. 25. Sacramento State has now won eight straight matches at home vs. Montana, and the Griz have not won in the Nest since 2013.
Montana opened the fifth set on a 5-0 run, before the Hornets responded with a 10-1 run behind impressive serving from
Keonahi'ilani Solaita and
Ashlynn Archer. After the Hornets' 10-1 spurt, Montana could not draw even the rest of the way.
Marthaler's 33 kills accompanied a .307 hitting percentage and eight digs. Setter
Kate Doorn had a huge match with a career-best 57 assists to go with four aces, four blocks and a career-high tying 14 digs. She quarterbacked a Hornet offense that hit .292, including .500 in the fourth set and .429 in the fifth.
