Victoria Marthaler had 20 kills, and freshman
Keonahi'ilani Solaita added nine to lead Sacramento State to a sweep of Montana State (25-21, 25-18, 25-12) on Saturday afternoon at the Nest.
The Hornets neutralized Montana State from the service line, completely throwing the Bobcats out of their offense. Sacramento State had a season-high 13 aces despite the match lasting just three sets, and Montana State hit just .169. Conversely, the Hornets hit .345, including .444 in the third set. Coupled with Thursday's win over Montana, the Hornets have won the first two games of their season-long four match homestand. Sacramento State improved to 11-8 overall and 4-3 in the Big Sky Conference. That includes six straight home wins. The Hornets, who have dominated in the Nest during conference play, are now 72-12 at home vs Big Sky competition since 2015.
Montana State dropped 9-9 overall and 4-3 in the Big Sky. This afternoon marked the only matchup of the season between the Hornets and Bobcats. The Hornets improved to 52-12 all-time vs. Montana State, including a 30-4 mark inside the Nest.
Marthaler continued her assault on the Big Sky, finishing with 20 kills and a .341 hitting percentage. She has tallied 20-plus kills in three straight matches, including 33 in each of her previous two matches. Just a sophomore, Marthaler is now averaging a league-leading 6.07 kills per set in Big Sky play.
Solaita, a true freshman, finished with nine kills and season highs in both hitting percentage (.467) and aces (5). She also had five digs and a block. Archer had five kills, a .500 hitting percentage and match-high six blocks, and Doorn finished with 24 assists, nine digs and three blocks. Ampi had seven digs, six assists and two aces.Â
The Hornets resume their homestand next week when they welcome Idaho and Eastern Washington to the Nest. That includes Thursday vs. Idaho at 7 p.m., and Saturday vs. Eastern Washington at 1 p.m.Â
