BENBROOK TIES COLLEGIATE BEST IN SECOND ROUND OF PACIFIC INVITATIONAL

Hornets move into fifth place with under-par rounds from Benbrook and Mate

STOCKTON, Calif. — Mason Benbrook matched his collegiate best with a 4-under par round of 68 to lead the Sacramento State men's golf team in the second round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational on Friday at The Reserve. The Hornets finished the day at 3-under par as a team and moved up one position into fifth place heading into the final round.

Benbrook is tied for seventh place overall with a two-day total of 69-68-137. His second-round score matches his mark from the Allister MacKenzie Invitational while he was playing for Fresno State. Benbrook started Friday's round with a bogey on No. 1 but made the turn at 2-under following birdies on the par-3 fourth, par-4 fifth and seventh. He moved to 3-under with a birdie on No. 10 and, following five pars, birdied the par-5 16th. The senior's only bogey on the back nine came on No. 17 but was immediately followed by a birdie on the par-4 18th.

Zach Mate also finished in the red during the second round with a 71. Mate matched Benbrook's 2-under performance on the front nine as he had birdies on Nos. 2, 5 and 7 as well as a bogey on the par-3 fourth.  Mate began the back nine with a birdie and added another on the par-4 12th to get to 4-under. He finished his round with three pars and three bogeys over the final six holes and is tied for 27th overall.

Max Thomas is tied for 40th at 73-72-145. Thomas posted a birdie on the par-5 sixth and eight pars on the front nine. After the turn, he recorded birdies on Nos. 11 and 18 and bogeys on Nos. 10, 15 and 17.

Jake Aberle and Gabriel Smith rounded out the lineup with each posting around of 74. Aberle was 1-over through the first nine holes with eight pars and a bogey on the par-4 fifth. He added seven additional pars on the back side of the course with the exceptions being a birdie on the par-5 17th and a double bogey on the par-3 13th.

Smith was 2-under through four holes with birdies on Nos. 2 and 4 but stood at 1-over at the midway point of his round following bogeys on Nos. 6, 8 and 9.  He again had a quick start to the back nine with birdies on the par-4 10th and par-5 11th before bogeys on Nos. 13 and 14. A double-bogey on No. 17 lifted him to 3-over before he birdied the par-4 18th.

Sacramento State was also represented by Zach Matzke and Jai Bahl who are competing as individuals. Matzke shot 73 on Friday with four birdies, a bogey and a quadruple bogey. Bahl posted a 76 comprised of an eagle, three birdies, three bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey.

Host Pacific entered the second round tied with Colorado for first place but the Tigers were 25-under as a team during the second round and now own a 13-stroke advantage. The team counted scores of 65, 65, 66 and 67 during the round with 28 birdies and three bogeys.

The tournament will conclude with the third round on Saturday. Sacramento State will be paired with San Diego and California Baptist off the first tee beginning at 8:24 a.m. and the final group teeing off at 9 a.m.
