SACRAMENTO -- The Hornets beat San Francisco, 3-1 (26-24, 31-33, 25-19, 25-21), and were crowned Sacramento State Invitational champions after posting a perfect 3-0 record during the three-day event.
Four teams converged on the Nest from Thursday-Saturday, and Sacramento State was the lone unbeaten team at the finish line, beating CSUN (3-0), New Mexico State (3-2) and San Francisco (3-1). Each of the other three teams finished with 1-2 records.
Three Hornets were named to the all-tournament team, highlighted by co-MVPs
Bridgette Smith and
Caitlin Volkmann.
Ashlynn Archer was the third representative as the trio had a big hand in defeating three very good teams. Smith averaged 3.92 kills and 3.67 digs per set, Volkmann had 3.83 kills, 2.83 digs and 0.58 blocks to go along with seven aces, and Archer registered 2.17 kills and 0.92 blocks per set.
This afternoon, the Hornets (3-2 overall) and Dons were locked in a back and forth match that featured 40 ties and 16 lead changes. That included 23 ties and 11 lead changes in the second set alone. However, it was Sacramento State that posted 17 more kills (70-53), eight more digs (77-69) and two more team blocks (8.0-6.0). In addition, the Hornets hit .260 while limiting USF to a .185 mark.
Three Hornets had double figures in kills, including two that registered double-doubles. That included Smith (22 kills, 18 digs) and Volkmann (18 kills, 12 digs) who combined for 40 of the team's 70 kills. Archer added 11 kills and four blocks, and
