DAVIS, Calif. - Sacramento State was held to a season-low hitting percentage (.084), and fell in four sets at UC Davis (25-13, 28-26, 19-25, 25-14), on Tuesday evening at University Credit Union Center.
With the loss, the Hornets had their three-match winning streak snapped while falling to 3-3. UC Davis moved its record to 4-2. Despite the defeat, Sacramento State still leads the all-time series over the Aggies by a wide margin (54-27).
The Hornets, who were coming off a Sacramento State Invitational championship over the weekend, finished tonight with just 36 kills. The .084 hitting percentage was easily the team's lowest mark of the season. Still, Sacramento State had chances to make things interesting. That included a second set in which the Hornets had a set point at 24-23, and saved two Aggie set points at 24-25 and 25-26, before eventually falling.
That gave UC Davis a 2-0 lead before the Hornets won the third frame to cut into the Aggie advantage. However, UC Davis led from start to finish in the fourth set to put the match away.
Caitlin Volkmann led all players with 15 kills to go along with nine digs. She was the only Hornet with more than eight kills, and accounted for over 40 percent of the team's output.
Bridgette Smith added eight kills and a team-best 15 digs, and
Ashlynn Archer posted five kills, three blocks and a match-best .400 hitting percentage.
Greta Davis had five kills,
Kate Doorn posted 11 digs, and
Abbey Kadillak chipped in seven digs. The Hornets finished with eight aces, including two each from Archer and
Mia Guevara.
This evening's match marked the first of eight straight away from home for the Hornets. In fact, the team will be on the road until opening Big Sky Conference play on Sept. 26 at home vs. Montana State.
Sacramento State will leave early tomorrow morning for its first-ever trip to Michigan. The Hornets will play four times over three days from Thursday-Saturday in the Wolverine State. That begins with a pair of matches on Thursday in Ann Arbor against Saint Francis (9 a.m. PT) and Michigan (4 p.m. PT). The Hornets will then travel to Rochester for matches on Friday at Oakland (3 p.m. PT) and Saturday vs. Akron (9 a.m. PT).
