ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sacramento State's
Bridgette Smith (17) and
Caitlin Volkmann (10) combined for 17 of the team's 42 kills as the Hornets swept Saint Francis, 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-12), on Thursday afternoon at Cliff Keen Arena.
The Hornets (4-3 overall) were playing the first of a stretch of four matches over three days in Michigan. Its the program's first-ever trip to the Great Lakes State, and the team returns later today to face host Michigan at 4 p.m. PT. The three-day tourney is being co-hosted by Michigan and Oakland, as the Hornets will play in Rochester on Friday and Saturday.
Sacramento State has won four of its last five matches, and today is the second of a stretch of eight straight contests the Hornets will play away from home. Saint Francis, a school that resides in Loretto, Pa., and is a member of the Northeast Conference, fell to 3-4 with the loss.
The Hornets posted their highest hitting percentage of the season (.319) while limiting Saint Francis to an .093 mark. That is the lowest mark by a Hornet opponent thus far. Sacramento State had 11 more kills (42-31) than the Red Flash, which included limiting Saint Francis to just six kills in the third set.
Smith had a big match, averaging 5.7 kills per set on the way to 17 kills, five digs and a .375 hitting percentage. Volkmann posted 10 kills, six digs and a .333 hitting percentage. Both players have connected for double-figure kills in all but one match this year.
Ashlynn Archer, who is a team tri-captain with Smith and Volkmann, finished with five kills, four blocks and a .625 hitting percentage. The four blocks were a match high. Libero

Kate Doorn finished with 24 assists and four digs.
True freshman
Skyler Gartin registered her first collegiate kill, finishing with a pair of kills in three attempts.
Hailey Plugge had nine assists and four digs.
