ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan had 45 kills and hit .340 on the way to a three-set sweep (25-13, 25-16, 25-21) of Sacramento State on Thursday evening at Crisler Center.
The Hornets, who were playing their second match of the day, dropped to 4-4 overall. Earlier this afternoon, Sacramento State swept Saint Francis to open the three-day, four-match tournament co-hosted by Michigan and Oakland. The Hornets will play twice more - once on Friday, once on Saturday - in Rochester, Mich.
Michigan improved to 7-0 with the win, including 5-0 at home. The Hornets and Wolverines were playing for just the second time ever, and first since a 3-0 Michigan win in Stockton during the 2000 season.
The Wolverines had 23 more kills than the Hornets (45-22) in a matchup that saw the Hornets take their only lead of the match at 1-0 of the third frame. Michigan's .340 hitting percentage was the highest mark yielded by the Hornets this season.
Bridgette Smith led the Hornets in kills (9), digs (9) and aces (2) while adding a pair of blocks.
Caitlin Volkmann posted six kills and three digs,
Ellie Tisko had four kills, and
Ashlynn Archer three kills. Those four players combined for all 22 of the Hornets' kills.
Karlie Spohn had a team-best four blocks.
Today marked the first time all season both Smith and Volkmann were held to under 10 kills in the same match.
Setter
Kate Doorn had 11 assists and three blocks, and
Hailey Plugge 10 assists and three digs. Libero
Reese Ampi recorded eight digs.
The Hornets return to action tomorrow when they play at Oakland in a matchup that begins at 3 p.m. PT. The tournament concludes Saturday when Sacramento State plays Akron at 9 a.m. PT.
