ROCHESTER, Mich. --
Caitlin Volkmann led all players with 16 kills to pace the Hornets to a three-set sweep of Oakland (25-20, 25-23, 25-20) on Friday evening at Credit Union O'rena.
The Hornets improved to 2-1 at the three-day tournament co-hosted by Michigan and Oakland. Sacramento State also swept Saint Francis yesterday in Ann Arbor.
Overall, the Hornets improved their record to 5-4, and conclude the five-team tourney tomorrow at 9 a.m. PT against Akron.
After beginning the season with a pair of losses, Sacramento State has won five of its last seven matches. Oakland, which was playing its home opener, dropped to 2-5 with the loss.
The Hornets hit just .144 (34-20-97), but controlled the service the line to the tune of 11 aces compared to just one for Golden Grizzlies. Four Hornets had multiple aces, comprised of Volkmann (3),
Bridgette Smith (3),
Kate Doorn (2) and
Ellie Tisko (2). In addition, Oakland had 11 service errors to go with its one ace.
Volkmann's 16 kills were eight more than any other player on the floor, as the senior outside hitter hit .367 with six digs and the three aces. She accounted for nearly half the team's kills while averaging 5.3 per set.
Smith had eight kills and nine digs, Tisko six kills, three digs and four blocks, and
Ashlynn Archer two kills and four blocks. Doorn posted 18 assists and four digs, and fellow setter
Hailey Plugge had 11 assists.
Reese Ampi had seven digs, and
Greta Davis had a kill and a block.
Today marked the Hornets' first win when playing on an opponent's home floor (1-3).
