VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN FOUR AT FRESNO STATE IN 2ND ROUND OF CENTRAL CAL CHALLENGE

FRESNO, Calif. -- After winning the first set, Fresno State won three straight frames to beat Sacramento State, 3-1 (20-25, 25-13, 25-16, 25-21), on Saturday evening at Save Mart Center.

The match was the second of the Central Cal Challenge, hosted by Fresno State. The Hornets are 1-1 at the three-day, four-team tournament after sweeping CSU Bakersfield yesterday afternoon. Sacramento State (7-5 overall) wraps up the tournament on Sunday vs. Pacific at noon. The Tigers are 2-0 thus far, defeating Fresno State in four, and CSU Bakersfield in three.

The tournament, which began in 2022 in Bakersfield, will see the Hornets host next season after Pacific hosted in 2023 and Fresno State this year.

The Hornets led the entire way while securing a first set victory. However, it was all Fresno State from there. The Bulldogs hit .409, .467 and .387, respectively, over the final three sets. Fresno State finished the match hitting .350, the highest figure by a Hornet opponent this season. The Hornets hit .235.

Despite the loss, outside hitter Bridgette Smith had a huge match, posting a team-high 17 kills with a .389 hitting percentage and eight digs. In 36 swings, she had 17 kills with just two errors. The 17 kills tied a match high, and were seven more than any other Hornet.

Ellie Tisko posted double figures in kills for the second straight match, finishing with 10 to go with seven digs. Ashlynn Archer registered eight kills, five blocks and a .467 hitting percentage. Through two tournament matches, the junior middle blocker is averaging 2.29 kills and 1.43 blocks while hitting .519 (16-2-27).

Caitlin Volkmann narrowly missed her fourth double-double of the season, finishing with nine kills and 10 digs. Reese Ampi had seven digs, and the two setters - Kate Doorn and Hailey Plugge - combined for 43 assists and eight digs.

Tomorrow's match vs. Pacific will mark the final non-conference contest of the season.
