FRESNO, Calif. -- Despite 21 kills from
Bridgette Smith and 15 from
Caitlin Volkmann, Sacramento State fell to Pacific, 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-17), on Sunday afternoon at Save Mart Center.
The match was the finale of the three-day, four-team Central Cal Challenge which saw the Hornets beat CSU Bakersfield (3-0) on Friday, followed by four-set losses to tourney host Fresno State on Saturday, and Pacific on Sunday.
Today also marked the final non-league game for Sacramento State as the team will enter Big Sky Conference play next week with a 7-6 overall record. The Hornets are entering Big Sky play with a record above .500 for the first time since the 2017 squad was 9-7.
Pacific improved to 10-2 overall and won the Central Cal Challenge with a perfect 3-0 record.
Senior outside hitter
Bridgette Smith was named to the all-tournament team after finishing with averages of 4.36 kills and 2.09 digs per set to go along with a .274 hitting percentage. She also had five aces, and paced the team in kills against both Fresno State (17) and Pacific (21). The team tri-captain has now been named all-tourney at all four tournaments the Hornets have participated this season.
The biggest difference in today's match came at the service line where Pacific had nine aces compared to just one for the Hornets. The one ace was a season low, as Sacramento State had 10 service errors as well. Much like yesterday's match at Fresno State, the Hornets won the first set before dropping the next three.
Perhaps the biggest stretch of the match came late in the third set when the Hornets held a 20-17 lead. However, Pacific closed on an 8-2 run to take a 2-1 lead and the momentum.
Smith's 21 kills were a match high while she also had 10 digs, a .269 hitting percentage and her fourth double-double of the season. She is now averaging 3.85 kills per set this season, and is just 16 shy of becoming the fifth player in school history to record 1,500 career kills.
Caitlin Volkmann had 15 kills and eight digs, as she and Smith combined for 36 of the team's 52 kills.
Ellie Tisko finished with eight kills and three blocks, and
Ashlynn Archer posted four kills and four blocks.
Setters
Kate Doorn (24, 7) and
Hailey Plugge (12, 7) combined for 36 assists and 14 digs. Libero
Reese Ampi also had seven digs.
Sacramento State will play four of its first five conference matches at home, including Thursday vs. Montana State in the Nest at 7 p.m. The Hornets will play on the road Saturday at Eastern Washington, before a stretch of three straight home games Oct. 4-12.
