SAN FRANCISCO — Opening the fall season against some of the nation's top players, senior Maddy Ferreros and sophomore Irene Riva wrapped up competition at the 2024 Battle in the Bay Classic at the California Tennis Club from Sept. 12-15.

Riva and Ferreros were among a field that featured student-athletes from 16 of the nation's preseason top 75 teams in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings — including six of the nation's top-10 squads and two more in the top 25.

The duo opened play with a close battle against Virginia Tech's Mila Mulready and Ozlem Uslu, falling 8-5 in the main draw's round of 16. They then found themselves matched up against the nation's No. 36-ranked tandem of Emma Charney and Imogen Haddad from USC, falling 8-3.

Ferreros and Riva then split up for additional opportunities in singles play. Ferreros posted a straight-set 6-3, 6-3, win over Georgia's Sarah Branicki before falling to Mulready in a three-set affair, 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3). 

Riva fell to Mulready, 6-0, 6-3, in her opening match on Saturday (Sept. 14) before dropping a 6-3, 6-3, contest to Pepperdine's Duru Soke a day later.

Sacramento State will send a full contingent back to the Bay Area next weekend (Sept. 27-29), competing at the California Fall Invitational in Berkeley, Calif., for its second fall tournament.
