MEN'S GOLF TIED FOR THIRD PLACE AFTER FIRST TWO ROUNDS OF PALOUSE COLLEGIATE

Hornets count four rounds in the 60s during opening day

PULLMAN, Wash. — Led by a pair of 66s from Max Thomas and Luke Dugger in the first round and a 65 from Zach Mate in the second round, the Sacramento State men's golf team is tied for third place after the first day of the Palouse Collegiate on Tuesday.

The Hornets shots identical rounds of 276 and finished the day 16-under par. The single-round scores are tied for the 10th-lowest in school history and have the team tied with Washington State, Wyoming and San Jose State for third place. The teams are chasing Utah (35-under) and Colorado (26-under) in the standings heading into the final round.

In the first round, Dugger and Thomas were each 6-under par. Dugger had five birdies on the front nine and was even on the back nine with a birdie and a bogey. Thomas was bogey free in his first collegiate round, posting three birdies on the front nine and two on the back nine. The team also counted 1-over par rounds of 72 from Patrick Dumag and Zach Mate.

Mate returned in the second round to shoot 65 and match his career low. The junior had an eagle on the par-5 18th, five birdies and a bogey. His score is tied for the seventh-lowest in school history and tied his mark from the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate last fall. Thomas added an even-par 71 and the pair are tied for 11th overall at 4-under par.

Dumag set his carer best with a 2-under par round of 69 and Jai Bahl completed the team total with a 71. Overall, Dugger is tied for 34th place at 2-under. Dumag is one stroke back and is tied for 37th and Bahl is 2-over to tie for 61st.

The third round of the tournament will start at 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday. The Hornets will be paired with Wyoming, Oregon State and Pacific off holes 5-7.
