LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Sacramento State saw its season come to an end at the Big West Conference Beach Volleyball Championship Thursday afternoon. The Hornets dropped their first match to 7th-ranked Long Beach State, 4-1, before falling later in the day to CSU Bakersfield, 3-2.
The double elimination tournament features all seven teams in the Big West, and the Hornets finish the season with seven victories. That is the program's most since the 2017 season.
One of the highlights of the day came against Long Beach State, where the Hornets' No. 3 pair of
Mia Guevara/
Karlee Soderberg won their match by a 21-17, 5-21, 15-13 score. The victory came against a team that is currently ranked seventh in the nation, and against an LBSU pair (Gibson/Glenn) that had been 17-3 this season.
That marked the Hornets' lone win against a Long Beach State team that defeated the Hornets earlier this season in Sacramento by a 5-0 score.
In the matchup with Bakersfield, the Hornets had an early 2-1 lead, but the 'Runners ripped off two straight wins to pull out the 3-2 victory. Sacramento State and Bakersfield played each other four times this season, and three of those outcomes resulted in 3-2 scores.
Sacramento State received wins from its No. 1 tandem of
Kalani Hayes/
Ellie Tisko (21-16, 21-10), and No. 2 team of
Caitlin Volkmann/
Greta Davis (21-17, 21-11). However, the Hornets lost matches at Nos. 3, 4 and 5. That included matches that went to three sets at the Nos. 3 and 4 spots.
Both Tisko and Volkmann finish the season with 14 individual wins, the new Sacramento State single-season record. In addition, Volkmann's 35 career individual wins are a program record.
