SOFTBALL FALLS TO #19 CAL IN FINAL GAME BEFORE CONFERENCE PLAY

BERKELEY -- Cal's Haylei Archer threw a four-hit shutout to lead the 19th-ranked Golden Bears to a 6-0 victory over Sacramento State on Wednesday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field.

Today marked the second time in eight days the Hornets have faced a nationally ranked opponent as Sacramento State split a road doubleheader at ninth-ranked Stanford last Wednesday. Today was also the final game for the Hornets before Big Sky Conference play begins next week.

Cal improved its record to 22-7 this season, while the Hornets dropped to 19-12.

The Bears scored twice in the first, once in the second and twice more in the fourth. Archer (4-1) was impressive, allowing the Hornets four singles and no runs with two walks and six strikeouts over seven innings. Sacramento State's best chance to score came in the sixth when the Hornets put runners at second and third with one out, but could not push across a run.

Shortstop Gwen Ludwig had two of the Hornets' four hits as she finished 2-for-2 with a walk and stolen base. She also improved her hitting streak to five games. Right fielder Haley Hanson went 1-for-3 and pushed her hitting streak to six games. Nikki Barboza, starting at second base for the second straight game, provided the Hornets' other hit.

Marissa Bertuccio (9-5) threw another complete game, but took the loss. She allowed six runs (four earned) with three strikeouts over six innings. Bertuccio had gone 11 straight appearances allowing two earned runs or less prior to that streak coming to an end today.

Sacramento State has just 17 games remaining on the regular season schedule, and 15 of those will come against Big Sky opposition. That includes the Hornets' next set of games that come via three-game road series at Northern Colorado from March 29-30. On Friday, the 29th, the Hornets will play a doubleheader against the Bears at 1 p.m. PT.
