MEN’S TENNIS BEGINS LONG STRETCH OF BIG SKY MATCHES WITH 5-2 WIN OVER IDAHO STATE

SACRAMENTO -- With the match tied at 2-2, Sacramento State received three-set singles wins from Adam Chodur, Mate Voros and Rudolfs Aksenoks as the Hornets defeated Idaho State, 5-2, on Wednesday morning on campus.

The two teams were originally scheduled to play each another on March 1, but that match was postponed due to inclement weather in the Sacramento area. Instead, the two teams played today in ideal conditions which included blue skies and temperatures in 70s.

The victory improved the Hornets to 10-5 overall, 2-1 in the Big Sky Conference, and 8-1 at home. Today concluded a six-match homestand that saw Sacramento State go 5-1. In addition, today is the first of six consecutive Big Sky matchups for the Hornets.

Idaho State, which had won three straight, dropped to 9-7 overall and 1-1 in the Big Sky. The Bengals hadn't dropped a match since Feb. 24, a 6-1 road loss at BYU.

After losing the doubles point, Sacramento State quickly tied things at 1-1 when Mark Keki won his match in quick fashion at No. 1 by a 6-3, 6-1 score. Idaho State reclaimed the lead with a win at No. 5, but Jan Silva tied things at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

At 2-2, the Hornets and Bengals saw the remaining three singles matches go to three sets. Sacramento State won all three of those frames in quick fashion, including Chodur at No. 4 (3-6, 6-1, 6-3), Voros at No. 2 (6-1, 5-7, 6-2) and Aksenoks at No. 6 (5-7, 6-4, 6-1). The Voros victory clinched the Hornets' fourth point.

"After dropping the doubles point, it was impressive to watch our guys show a lot of singles grit and beat a very good Idaho State team," Sacramento State head coach Kevin Kurtz said. "Our players continued to get better throughout their singles matches, which included some very good third set tennis."

The Hornets do not play again until next week when they travel to the Treasure State for matchups on Thursday at Montana (11 a.m. PT) and Saturday at Montana State (9 a.m. PT)
