BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Host Cal State Bakersfield rode a hat trick from Connor Mautino and a stingy defensive effort to spoil Sacramento State's Big West Conference opener on Wednesday afternoon, posting a 3-0 victory at the CSUB Main Soccer Field.
Kicking off at 11 a.m. as part of the Roadrunners' annual "Education Day," Wednesday's defeat put an end to the Hornets' five-match unbeaten streak, as they fell to 3-5-2 overall and 0-1 in Big West play. It was Sacramento State's first defeat in nearly a month dating back to a 1-0 decision at San Diego State on the road on Sept. 6.
Bakersfield, playing only its third home match of the year, extended its unbeaten streak to three in improving to 4-2-2 overall and 1-0 in league.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mac Learned, who entered the week ranked No. 6 in the NCAA in total saves and led the Big West in saves, saves per match, and save percentage, finished with seven stops on the afternoon, upping his career total to 170 — just 12 back of Ryan Curtis (2018-19, 2021) for eighth on the school's all-time list.
The seven stops are tied for Learned's second-highest total of the year, matching his output against the Aztecs, and finished just two shy of his season high of nine set in a win over San Francisco on Sept. 12.
Mautino provided all the offense that the Roadrunners needed on the day, completing his hat trick with goals in the 14th, 50th, and 79th minutes, while putting six of his seven shot attempts on frame. He nearly out-shot his entire team, accounting for nearly half of the team's 16 shots on the afternoon.
Meanwhile, the Hornets put five of their nine shot attempts on frame, including two apiece from sophomores Donovan Sessoms and Simon Vaca-Lorenzi. Sacramento State also finished with five of the seven corner kick attempts for the match, but came up empty.
The Hornets play only their fourth home match of the year on Saturday (Oct. 5) at 4 p.m., welcoming UC Riverside to Northern California.
