BERKELEY, Calif. — The Sacramento State doubles teams of Maddy Ferreros and Irene Riva, along with the duo of Lou Baudouin and Palina Saulevich, each made their way into the main draw round of 16 in Berkeley, Calif., over the weekend, highlighting the Hornets' performances at the ITA Northwest Regionals co-hosted by California and Saint Mary's.
It was the third trip to the Bay Area for Sacramento State this fall following the 2024 Battle in the Bay Classic and California Fall Invitational.
Ferreros and Riva opened with back-to-back 8-4 victories over Seattle's Lola Tavcar and Larissa Teramura and Santa Clara's TianYu Dong and Jillian Roa. They then ran into the fifth-seeded Golden Bears' tandem of Makenna Thiel and Berta Passola Folch, falling 8-3.
The ninth-seeded tandem of Baudouin and Saulevich opened with a dominating 8-3 victory over Pacific's Nahreen Cheam and Indiya McLeod before coming out on top against UC Davis' Polina Marakhtanova and Madeline Page, 8-5. The duo then fell to Washington's State's Hania Abouelsaad and Martina Markov in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (5).
Weronika Ejsmont and Emilija Pranyte also won their main draw opener via shutout over a team from Seattle U, before taking on the No. 90 team in the nation in Washington's Sophie Luescher and Erika Matsuda, falling 8-2.
Ferreros and Riva improved to 2-3 overall as a team, while Baudouin and Saulevich, as well as Ejsmont and Pranyte, played together for the first time this fall.
In singles, a quartet of players won a pair of matches on the weekend, including Pranyte, who advanced out of qualifying and into the main draw with a three-set win over UC Davis' Kaia Wolfe, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (4), and California's Cami Brown, 6-0, 7-6 (4). Baudouin and Ferreros also won their main draw openers against Oregon's Karin Young (6-2, 7-6 [3]) and San Jose State's Duru Durgun (6-1, 6-2).
Riva posted wins over Seattle's Jade Quintana, 6-0, 6-1, and Portland's Aleksandra Dimitrijevic, 7-5, 6-3, while newcomer Palina Saulevich defeated Pacific's Elizaveta Mladentseva (8-7 [2]) and Seattle's Mina Yazadzhiev (6-3, 6-0).
With her singles performances over the weekend, Ferreros improved to 6-3 overall this fall, while Pranyte, Baudouin, and Saulevich also moved to four wins in the fall.
Sacramento State is now off until Nov. 8-10 when the Hornets head down the coast for their final tournament of the fall, competing at the Cal Poly Hidden Duals in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
