MEN'S GOLF TIED FOR NINTH FOLLOWING FIRST ROUND OF VISIT STOCKTON PACIFIC INVITATIONAL

Max Thomas leads the team at 1-under par and is tied for 19th

STOCKTON, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team had a near-perfect start to the first round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational before ending the day at 1-over. The Hornets held the team lead at the midway point of the round after playing the back side of the course at 4-under par. The front nine proved to be tougher as the five players were a combined 5-over.
 
San Diego charged to the lead at 12-under during the day. Host Pacific is second at 9-under while Grand Canyon and California Baptist are 8-under and tied for third. Sacramento State is one of three teams tied for ninth place.
 
Max Thomas posted the low score for the Hornets on Monday, finishing at 1-under to tie him for 19th place. Thomas birdied three of his first five holes and was 3-under at the turn. He started the front nine with a birdie to drop to 4-under but immediately followed with a bogey on the par-5 second. After five pars, he double-bogeyed the par-3 eighth and then parred No. 9 to end his day.
 
Patrick Dumag is tied for 33rd with an even-par 71. Dumag was 2-under on the back nine with birdies on Nos. 10, 13 and 16 a bogey on No. 12. He birdied the par-3 second but added a bogey on No. 3 and a triple bogey on No. 4 to stand at 1-over. Dumag's final birdie came on the par-3 eighth to return him to even.
 
Zach Mate and Gabriel Smith each shot 72 and are tied for 46th. Mate started his round with a bogey on No. 10 but was 1-under at the midway point of the round following birdies on Nos. 7 and 8. A double bogey on No. 1 took him to 1-over before he birdied No. 2. He parred seven of the final eight holes with the exception being a bogey on the par-3 eighth. Smith was 4-over through six holes before catching fire with five birdies on his next eight holes. His final birdie of the day came on the par-4 fifth to get him to 1-under. From there, he alternated pars and bogeys over the final four holes.
 
Luke Dugger is tied for 59th at 2-over. Dugger had three birdies and three bogeys on the back nine and added two birdies, a bogey and a triple bogey on the front side.
 
The Hornets also had three golfers playing as individuals. Zach Matzke led the trio and is tied for 59th at 2-over. Matzke had three birdies and five bogeys in the round.
 
Sacramento State will start the second round off the first tee at 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday. The team will be paired with UC San Diego and UC Irvine. The tournament concludes on Wednesday.
