WOMEN’S SOCCER SCORES LATE, FALLS AT HAWAI’I

WAIPAHU, O'ahu, Hawai'i -- Freshman Teysha-Ray Spinney-Kuahuia netted her first career goal late in the match to break up the shutout bid and redshirt freshman goalkeeper Izzy Palmatier finished with a career-high nine saves on the night, but the Sacramento State women's soccer team couldn't dig out of an early hole, falling at Hawai'i by a 3-1 score on Thursday night.

The loss dropped the Hornets to 0-2-1 overall on the season, while the Rainbow Wahine picked up their first win of the year, evening up their record at 1-1-1 overall.

An own goal in the fourth minute of the match and a penalty kick in the 42nd minute staked Hawai'i to the two-goal halftime advantage before coming up with a third goal in the 65th minute to build a 3-0 lead.

Sacramento State had a chance to break through in the 87th minute, but a penalty kick attempt after a foul in the box went off target, but Spinney-Kuahuia came through just over a minute later, depositing a pass from teammate Ariana Scholten to the lower left corner for her first career score. The assist was also the first of Scholten's collegiate career.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the field, Palmatier was busy between the pipes for Sacramento State, facing a barrage of 22 shots from the Rainbow Wahine on the night. The nine stops more than doubled her previous career high of four saves in the team's last match against UC Davis on Aug. 20, and were the most since teammate Mia Shalit finished with 11 saves against Northern Arizona on Oct. 21 of last year.

Sophomore Madelyn Dougherty led all Hornets with three shot attempts on the night, putting two on frame, while junior Abigail Lopez finished with two of her own.

Sacramento State closes out its trip to the Aloha State on Saturday (Aug. 26), taking on Hawai'i Pacific at 9 p.m. PT.
