DOUGHERTY’S GOAL STANDS AS WOMEN’S SOCCER CLAIMS FIRST WIN OF 2023

WAIPAHU, O'ahu, Hawai'i -- Sophomore Madelyn Dougherty's first career goal in the 19th minute on Saturday night was enough for the Sacramento State women's soccer team to collect its first victory of the season as the Hornets shutout host Hawai'i Pacific by a 1-0 score at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The victory ended the team's two-match trip to the Aloha State on a high note as Sacramento State improved to 1-2-1 overall on the season. Saturday's match was the season opener for the Sharks.

Dougherty came through with the go-ahead score at the 18:54 mark of the first half, finding room to the top left side of the net to beat goalkeeper Sophia Garrido for the only goal of the contest. Garrido didn't let much else past her as the California native finished with eight saves on the night.

Sacramento State peppered HPU to the tune of a 12-4 shot advantage on the evening, putting nine of those 12 attempts on frame. Dougherty accounted for a match-high four of those shots on her own, putting all four of her attempts on goal. Six other Hornets contributed shots to the total, including two each by Ali Fuamatu-Ma'afala and Lexi Schroeder.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the field, goalkeeper Izzy Palmatier was forced into only one save on the night, collecting her first career victory and first career shutout in the process. The Sacramento State defense was stingy, holding Hawai'i Pacific to without a shot attempt in the second half.

After returning home and with the start of classes for the fall semester on the horizon, the Hornets return to the field on Thursday (Aug. 31) at 2 p.m., hosting UC Riverside at Hornet Soccer Field. It is the first match of a doubleheader with the men's team, which hosts Utah Tech in its home opener at 5 p.m.
