FOOTBALL HOLDS FIRST SCRIMMAGE OF FALL CAMP

SACRAMENTO, Calif.  — The Sacramento State football team held its first scrimmage of fall camp, running 76 plays under the lights of Hornet Stadium on Saturday night. The format featured the offense starting at various points on the field and saw the team use all of its available players.

"Our goals for today where to see a lot of players play," Sacramento State head coach Andy Thompson said. "We've been practicing hard all week and wanted to place the guys into some game situations. We were able to play all 105 players who were able which is a good number and allowed us to have several different combinations. We'll now get a chance to look at the tape and see what we need to improve on."

The defense made the first big play of the night when Zelmar Vedder jumped a route along the sideline for an interception on the second play of the scrimmage.

The offense answered with a six-play, 75-yard drive on the ensuing series. Carson Camp completed all five attempts during the series, capping the drive with a 29-yard pass to tight end Marshel Martin IV.

Momentum swung back to the defense which recorded a pair of stops on the next two drives. Josh Cashiola was credited with a tackle-for-loss on 3rd-and-3 to end the first drive. Kylen Ross added a TFL on the next drive and the unit stopped a QB scramble on third down to get off the field.

The offense found the end zone with a couple of big catches during the next drive. Ashar Granger hauled in a tipped pass for a 16-yard completion on 4th-and-4 to keep the drive alive. True freshman quarterback Joey Cook later found tight end Austin Jarrard for a diving one-handed 15-yard touchdown.

The defense dug in following the score and for three consecutive three-and-outs. The third series featured a 7-yard sack on the opening play to put the offense behind the chains.

The night closed with the offense scoring touchdowns on six of the final eight drives. Devin Gandy caught a 26-yard touchdown pass from Carson Camp for the first score. After a defensive stop, Elijah Tau-Tolliver broke free for a 33-yard score. Tau-Tolliver found the end zone for a second time on a 3-yard carry. That touchdown following four consecutive carries from Ezra Moleni for a total of 37 yards.

Kaiden Bennett led the offense on a 9-play touchdown drive. Bennett scrambled on 3rd-and-16 before finding Charlie McBride for a 20-yard gain. He then connected with Xavier Mason for a 14-yard score.

The defense made its last big play with a stop on 3rd-and-goal after the offensive had taken the ball to the 2-yard line. However, the offense picked up two scores on the last five plays of the night. Cook hit Sawyer Merrill in stride for a 58-yard touchdown pass. Carson Conklin ended the night with a 44-yard strike to Devin Gandy for his second score of the scrimmage.

The four Hornet quarterbacks combined to complete 25-of-35 passes for 346 yards and six touchdowns. Helped by their long touchdowns, Gandy (77 yards) and Merrill (73) led the team's receivers. Tau-Tolliver and Moleni each rushed for a team-high 43 yards.

Sacramento State will start its season on Thursday, Aug. 31, at Nicholls State. The team's first home game will come on Saturday, Sept. 9, against Texas A&M-Commerce.
