MARICOPA, Ariz. — The Sacramento State women's golf team completed its wire-to-wire victory at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on Tuesday at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club. Playing in high winds, the Hornets shot 306 during the final round but were able to extend their lead to seven strokes in the team standings.
The tournament victory is the third of the season, and second in a row, for the team. The win places the team tied for second in school history and has the squad one win away from tying the school record of four tournament titles in 2017-18.
Individually,
Jennifer Koga was the medalist at 67-75-75-217. Koga finished one stroke ahead of Hawaii's Hyeonji Kang and UC Riverside's Tiffany Le. The victory was the second of the season for the junior. She joins Julia Becker (2016-17) as the only golfers in school history to win multiple events in the same year.
Koga was 1-under through her first five holes before consecutive birdies on Nos. 6 and 7. She made the turn even following a birdie on the par-4 ninth. On the back nine, she bogeyed the par-4 10th but returned to even with a birdie on the par-5 13th. She ended her round with bogeys on three of her final five holes.
Sienna Lyford,
Ella Kraft and
Tess Blair joined Koga in the top 10. Lyford placed eighth overall for her highest finish as a Hornet with rounds of 72-73-77-222. She opened Tuesday with four pars and then birdied the par-4 fifth and par-3 sixth. She moved back above par with a double bogey on the par-5 seventh and had five bogeys over her final 11 holes.
Kraft and Blair each tied for ninth place as the pair both scored 77 during the final round and finished with a 54-hole total of 223. Each had two birdies and seven bogeys during the third round. The finish for Blair ties her for the second most top 10 showings in school history (12) and extends her school record to 23 top 20 placements.
Caitlin Maurice completed the lineup with a 78 and tied for 23rd overall. Maurice had two birdies and eight bogeys on Tuesday.
Sneha Sharan, who competed as an individual also tied for 23rd place. Sharan shot 75 in the final round with three birdies and six bogeys.
Sacramento State was one of seven Big Sky Conference schools in the 20-team field. The Hornets finished 33 strokes ahead of Northern Arizona and were at least 50 strokes better than the other five conference teams in the tournament.
Sacramento State will next compete at the BYU Invitational in Provo, Utah on Apr. 10-11 before heading to the Big Sky Championships in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Apr. 17-19.
