FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Northern Arizona jumped out to an 11-2 lead and never looked back, on the way to a 77-55 victory over Sacramento State on Thursday evening at the Walkup Skydome.
Over half the Lumberjacks' made field goals were from long range, as NAU shot 56% (15-27) from deep. That included 7-for-15 in the first half when NAU raced out a 43-22 halftime lead, and 8-for-12 in the second half. Leading the charge was Jalen Cone who scored 25 points on 9-for-15 from the field, and 7-of-10 from long range.
The Lumberjacks led by double figures the final 25:42 of the contest, as Sacramento State could not overcome the Lumberjacks' hot shooting from deep. Sacramento State held advantages over NAU in points in the paint (30-22), second chance points (13-6) and bench points (29-13).
The Hornets dropped to 12-13 overall and 5-7 in the Big Sky Conference. Sacramento State now has just six regular season games remaining, and four of those will take place on the road. That includes a Saturday matchup at Northern Colorado.
The Hornets had three players score in double figures, led by
Callum McRae's 11 points and eight rebounds (four offensive) in 23 minutes. Point guard
Gianni Hunt had 10 points and four rebounds, and
Akol Mawein added 10 points, including 2-of-4 from long range.
Quadry Adams had a season-high nine points on 4-for-7 shooting go along with four rebounds.
Cameron Wilbon posted seven points and seven rebounds, and
Kiir Kiir Chol Deng added five points and three rebounds in a season-best 19 minutes. Deng started his second straight game.
Sacramento State returns to action on Saturday at Northern Colorado. Tip-off is 5 p.m. PT.
