LATE WEBER STATE RUN DELIVERS 52-49 WIN OVER MEN’S BASKETBALL

SACRAMENTO -- Weber State used a 12-6 run over the final 3:27 to beat Sacramento State, 52-49, on Thursday evening at the Nest.

In a game that featured nine ties and neither team leading by more than eight points, the Hornets took a three-point lead (43-40) at the 3:43 mark after Austin Patterson buried a 3-pointer. However, Weber State's Dillon Jones responded with six straight points to give the Wildcats a 46-43 lead with 1:40 remaining.

Weber State would eventually push that lead to four points with 11 seconds left, but the Hornets' Zach Chappell hit a long 3-pointer at the five-second mark to slice the Hornet deficit to 50-49. After Weber State's Zahir Porter hit a pair of free throws with four seconds remaining (52-49), Sacramento State had one last chance to tie. Chappell took the inbounds pass and raced up the floor, before his off balance contested 3-ball drew iron and missed at the buzzer.

The loss dropped Sacramento State to 12-15 overall and 5-9 in the Big Sky Conference. Today marked the first of two remaining home games, as only four games are left in the regular season. The Big Sky Tournament in Boise is set for March 4-8.

Weber State improved to 14-13 overall and 9-5 in the Big Sky. The Wildcats have won four of their last seven Big Sky road games, and swept the season series with Sacramento State. Weber State defeated the Hornets on Jan. 21 in Ogden in a game that was decided in the closing seconds (50-48). In fact, the Hornets' two lowest scoring outputs of the season have come against Weber State. In addition, the Wildcats' two lowest scoring outputs have come against the Hornets.

The Hornets shot 36% (18-50) from the field, 29% (7-24) from the 3-point line and 60% (6-10) from the free throw line. A number of those 3-point misses were wide open looks. Weber State shot 40% (19-47), including 17% (2-12) from long range and 67% (12-18) from the charity stripe. Weber State had a 13-2 advantage in points off turnovers and 8-0 in fast break points.

The Wildcats led at the break, 26-20, before the Hornets outscored the Wildcats, 29-26, in the second half.

Two Sacramento State players scored in double figures, led by Chappell's 17 points, four rebounds and four assists. Akol Mawein had 11 points and four rebounds, and Cameron Wilbon seven points, five boards and three assists. Center Callum McRae added six points, six rebounds and three blocked shots.

Austin Patterson had six points and three rebounds, and Hunter Marks two points, four rebounds and two assists.

Jones led Weber State with 13 points, 13 rebounds and a pair of steals.

The Hornets will play their final home game of the season on Saturday at 4 p.m. vs. Idaho State. Sacramento State will honor five seniors prior to the game for their contributions to the program - Chappell, McRae, Marks, Xavier Ford and Rick Barros III. After Saturday's game, the Hornets will play three road games over a five day stretch - Feb. 23 at Montana State; Feb. 25 at Montana; Feb. 27 at Portland State.
