HANSON, JACKSON LEAD WOMEN’S BASKETBALL AGAINST TITANS

SACRAMENTO — Freshman Summah Hanson posted her second consecutive double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds while freshman Ayanna Jackson came off the bench to pour in a career-high 12 points, but a late 10-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters helped lift visiting Cal State Fullerton to a 61-51 victory over Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon at The Nest.

The Hornets fell to 0-3 overall with the defeat, while the Titans picked up their first win on the year, moving to 1-1 overall.

For Hanson, it was her second consecutive double-double, following up her 22-point, 11-rebound performance at Nevada on Thursday with her performance on Sunday, scoring 12 of her 18 points in the second half against Fullerton. She finished with five baskets and hit 7-of-8 from the line, adding three assists and a pair of blocks to her stat line.

Meanwhile, Jackson, who had played in only 20 minutes in the previous two games, exploded off the bench on Sunday, hitting her first three shots and three free throws on the day en route to her best scoring performance of the season. She finished 4-of-8 from the floor — including her first career three-pointer — and added a pair of rebounds in 20 minutes.

Sophomore Irune Orio added a career-high eight points and five rebounds, while junior Seilala Lautaimi grabbed a career-high six rebounds.

A 7-0 run at the end of the first by the Titans put the Hornets in an early hole and they trailed by as many as 12 just a minute into the second, but Sacramento State settled in and began to claw its way back. A Hanson triple and a basket inside by Jackson cut it to single digits and the Hornets trailed by just eight at the break, 33-25, after battling Fullerton to an 18-18 draw in the scoring column in the quarter.

An early basket inside by the Titans upped their lead to 10, but Sacramento State began to chip away again. The Hornets scored six of the next seven points to make it a five-point game and the defense held Fullerton to without a field goal for nearly four minutes.

Jackson's three-pointer with 2:09 to play in the period helped key a 7-2 burst from the home side, making it a four-point contest at 42-38 and were within that same distance a minute later after a basket inside by Orio before the Titans began to pull away.

Two free-throws and a basket by Fullerton closed out the third and the Titans continued to find the bucket, scoring the first six points of the fourth to build a 14-point advantage with 8:13 remaining. A pair of free throws by Hanson with 1:53 remaining capped an 11-3 burst for the Hornets, but they would get no closer than six points at 57-51, as Cal State Fullerton scored inside and hit two free throws to close out the victory.

Both teams were relatively even from the field with the Titans shooting .352 to the Hornets' .321, while Fullerton held a narrow 37-36 advantage on the glass with both teams grabbing 13 offensive rebounds.

Sacramento State has nearly a week to prepare for its next contest, hosting San Diego State on Saturday (Nov. 18) at 2 p.m. at The Nest.
