HANSON’S THIRD STRAIGHT DOUBLE-DOUBLE LEADS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL AGAINST AZTECS

SACRAMENTO — Sacramento State freshman forward Summah Hanson collected her third straight double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, but a huge third quarter by visiting San Diego State broke open a four-point game at the break and lifted the Aztecs to a 68-45 win over the Hornets on Saturday afternoon at The Nest.

Hanson has led or shared the team lead in both scoring and rebounding in each of the first four games, finishing Saturday with 19 points and 11 rebounds on 7-of-12 from the field, which included a career-high tying four three-pointers. The 19 points trail only her 22-point outburst at Nevada on Nov. 9 for the most in her young collegiate career, while the 11 rebounds are tied for most in her career.

Over the last three games, the Brisbane, Australia, native is averaging 19.7 points and 11.0 rebounds per game, shooting .432 (19-for-44) from the field overall, .500 (9-of-18) from beyond the arc, and .800 (12-for-15) from the line. Hanson, who also added three blocks against San Diego State, is also averaging 2.3 assists and 2.3 blocks per contest in that same stretch.

Junior forward Seilala Lautaimi came off the bench to add a career-high eight points to go with three rebounds, while sophomore guard Benthe Versteeg finished with seven assists — just one shy of her career high of eight set on the road against the Wolf Pack.

Trailing by eight after one, the two teams traded three-pointers to start the second period and San Diego State (2-2) built its lead to 13 before the Hornets clawed their way back. Lautaimi scored inside and Kaylie Edge followed with a three-pointer to spark a 13-2 run that made it a two-point contest at 29-27 with 51 seconds to play and the Hornets (0-4) trailed by only four at the break.

A jumper by SDSU was answered by a three from Irune Orio to make it a three-point contest to start the second half, but that would be the closest Sacramento State would get. A three-pointer by Sarah Barcello started a quarter-closing 22-2 run by the Aztecs -- including the final 13 points of the period -- to lead 55-32 at the end of three periods and San Diego State never looked back.

Sacramento State continues its run of five straight at home on Tuesday (Nov. 21) at 6:30 p.m., welcoming UC Davis to The Nest for the first time since 2018 after the last two meetings between the rivals had been played at the Golden 1 Center in Downtown Sacramento.
