MEN’S HOOPS NOW 9-6 AND 2-0 IN LEAGUE AFTER OVERTIME ROAD WIN AT IDAHO

MOSCOW, Idaho -- In a game that featured 14 lead changes, 11 ties, and neither team leading by more than six points, it was Sacramento State that outlasted Idaho, 85-83, in overtime on Thursday evening at ICCU Arena.

The Hornets used a 10-0 run in the second half to claim a 63-58 lead with 6:39 left. Sacramento State held onto that lead until the closing seconds when Idaho's Dominique Ford forced overtime with a 10-footer at the buzzer that bounced on the rim twice before falling. That erased what had been a four-point Sacramento State lead with 10 seconds left.

Both teams went back and forth in the overtime session as neither team led by more than two points. Idaho's Isaac Jones scored his 42nd point of the evening to give Idaho its lone lead of the extra session at 83-82 with 1:48 left. However, the Hornets defense did not allow the Vandals to score again, as Idaho missed on its final two field goal attempts. A Zach Chappell bucket gave Sacramento State a one-point lead (84-83) with 48 seconds left, and Callum McRae's free throw with 1.8 seconds remaining were the final tallies. Idaho did not get a shot off after McRae's trip to the free throw line.

Sacramento State, which received huge nights from Chappell, McRae and Cameron Wilbon, continues to play good basketball. The Hornets have now won six of their last seven games while improving to 9-6 overall and 2-0 in the Big Sky Conference. The team is 2-0 in the Big Sky for just the fourth time since joining the league in 1996-97.

In addition, the Hornets are 2-1 in overtime games, and improved to 4-3 on the road. Sacramento State won just four road games all of last season. The Hornets are one of four teams still unbeaten in Big Sky play - Eastern Washington (3-0), Weber State (2-0), Idaho State (2-0) - and will play Eastern Washington in Cheney on Saturday afternoon.

Chappell scored his 1,000th collegiate point in the second half, and becomes the second Hornet in as many weeks to achieve the milestone (McRae). Chappell now has 1,006 points, and 663 of those have come during his two-plus seasons at Sacramento State. He finished with 22 points this evening, and 16 of those came after halftime (13 in the second half, 3 in overtime).

McRae had a monster night as the 7-foot-1 center had a season-high 27 points (13-19 FG) and career-high 17 rebounds (four offensive). The 17 boards are tied for the third most in Sacramento State's Div. I era. It marked his sixth double-double of the season, as he had 14 points in the first half, 10 in the second, and three in overtime. He is now averaging a double-double for the season (12.8 pg, 10.3 rpg). He and fellow Idaho big Jones were going back and forth all night, as Jones, who is one of the top players in the Big Sky, finished with 42 points (19-26 FG) and 12 rebounds.

Cameron Wilbon rounded out the Hornet trio in double figures with 18 points and six rebounds in 31 minutes off the bench. The trio combined for 67 of Sacramento State's 85 points. The Hornets shot 51% (35-69) from the field and had a massive 44-32 advantage in the rebounding department. In addition, the Hornets turned the ball over just eight times in 45 minutes,  had 13 second chance points, and committed only 10 fouls.

All three periods ended with outcomes of two points or less. Sacramento State led, 39-38, at half, Idaho held a 39-38 advantage in the second, and the Hornets had an 8-6 advantage in the extra session.

Gianni Hunt had six points, four assists, three rebounds, three steals and was a game-high +19 in plus/minus. In fact, no other Hornet was better than a +1, as Hunt's 36 minutes were huge. Austin Patterson had five points, four rebounds, and buried a 3-ball for the 12th straight game,. Quadry Adams posted five points, including a buzzer beating jumper as the first half horn sounded. Akol Mawein had two points and five rebounds, and Hunter Marks posted two boards and a steal.

For Idaho, Jones' 42 points accounted for over half the Vandals' offensive output.

Sacramento is back in action on Saturday at Eastern Washington. Tip-off at Reese Court is set for 2 p.m. After Saturday's game, the Hornets will play six of their next eight games in the Nest. The Hornets are 5-0 at home this year.
