Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MEN’S HOOPS GETS LOOK AT THE BUZZER, BUT LOSES AT WEBER STATE, 50-48

OGDEN, Utah -- Sacramento State closed the game on a 9-2 run, and Zach Chappell's running 12-footer at the buzzer spun around the rim and out, as the Hornets fell at Weber State, 50-48, at the Dee Events Center.

The Hornets have seen five of their last six games decided by four points or less, and the team is 2-3 in those outcomes. That includes a four-point loss at Idaho State on Thursday evening, as Sacramento State will begin a season-long four-game homestand next week.

The 50 points were the second fewest allowed by the Hornets this year, and Sacramento State's 48 points were a season low as both teams were not proficient from the field. The Wildcats led the majority of the second half and took a game-high nine point lead (48-39) with 4:57 remaining.

However, Weber State would score just two points the rest of the way as the Hornets used a 9-0 run to eventually tie things at 48-48 after a pair of free throws from Austin Patterson with 23 seconds remaining. By that time, the Wildcats had gone over four and a half minutes without a point, but Weber State's Dillon Jones connected on a contested layup with 6.3 seconds left to give the Wildcats a two-point lead.

After a timeout, Chappell took the inbounds pass and raced up the floor, shooting a contested 12-foot runner from the left side of the key that hit backboard and spun around the rim before falling out at the buzzer. Chappell had buried game winners in the closing seconds of three different games this year, but he could not connect tonight.

The loss dropped Sacramento State to 11-9 overall and 4-3 in the Big Sky Conference. All three of those conference losses have come on the road by four points or fewer as Sacramento State is not far off from being 7-0 in league play.

Weber State has now won eight of its last 11 games while improving to 10-10 and 5-2 in conference. The Dee Events Center has not been kind to the Hornets over the years, as Sacramento State is now just 2-26 all-time when playing the Wildcats on their home floor.

The Hornets posted season lows in points and field goal percentage (29%, 16-for-55), but their defense was up to the challenge against a Weber State team that just scored 84 points against Portland State two days ago. Neither team scored 30 points in either half, and Weber State finished 33% (17-52) from the field. Both teams did not shoot the 3-ball well as the Hornets were 5-for-26 and Wildcats 6-for-18.

Sacramento State outrebounded the Wildcats, 41-38, including 12 offensive rebounds. One of those offensive boards was snagged by Austin Patterson with 24 seconds left. He was fouled and buried two free throws at the 23 second mark to tie the game at 48-48.

Patterson was lone Hornet in double figures as he scored 12 points to go along with a career-high nine rebounds. No other Sacramento State player scored more than six points. Gianni Hunt had six points, four rebounds and a season-high tying five assists (with just one turnover). Quadry Adams had six points, a career-high six rebounds and team-best +8 in plus/minus, and Callum McRae finished with six points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

Hunter Marks had six points (2-4 3FG), three rebounds and two steals, Chappell six points, and Akol Mawein four points, five boards and two steals. Cameron Wilbon added two points and a pair of rebounds.

For Weber State, Jones was the best player on the floor all evening as he finished with game highs in points (18) and rebounds (14), as well as connecting on the game-winning bucket.

The Hornets will host the Montana schools next week. That includes Montana on Thursday, and Montana State on Saturday. Both games tip at 7 p.m.
