ALFARO’S LATE STRIKE TIES UP PACIFIC, 1-1

Genaro Alfaro's first goal of the year in the 83rd minute helps Hornets draw with Tigers

SACRAMENTO -- Playing a man down for the final 52 minutes following a red card, the Sacramento State men's soccer team fought all the way back to forge a 1-1 draw with visiting Pacific on a sweltering Sunday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field.

Playing their second of four consecutive matches against West Coast Conference competition, the draw kept the Hornets unbeaten in their last three and moved them to 2-1-1 overall on the season following Thursday's 4-1 victory over Saint Mary's.

The Tigers moved to 1-2-1 overall on the year with the result.

It was Pacific that got on the board first in the 21st minute as Yazid Omri scored his first of the year off a pass by Cooper Riley. Omri found himself deep inside the Sacramento State penalty area and chipped a ball that deflected off the Hornet keeper and just trickled over the line for the 1-0 lead.

That score lasted all the way until the 83rd minute when Cody Sundquist draw a foul just outside the 18, setting up a free kick for Sacramento State. Genaro Alfaro stepped to the ball and curled an attempt around the right side of the wall that left the Tigers' goalkeeper flat-footed to tie the contest at one apiece.

Sacramento State's defense then held strong, blocking another Pacific attempt in the 87th minute and bunkering down to turn away a Tiger charge in the final minute by clearing a cross out as the horn sounded.

Pacific held a slim, 11-10, advantage in shots, but the Hornets were able to put four of their attempts on frame to just three for the Tigers. Sacramento State also had six corners to five for the Tigers, who were also whistled for five offside calls.

Freshman Justin Faison finished with a team-high three shot attempts, while Christo Cervantes added two more. Making his second straight start, Edgar Guerra finished with a pair of saves in net for the Hornets.

Sacramento State closes its three-match homestand with a pair of matches next week, hosting Loyola Marymount on Thursday (Sept. 8) at 4 p.m., before welcoming Gonzaga for a Noon kickoff on Sunday (Sept. 11).
