SACRAMENTO -- The Sacramento State beach volleyball squad finished the first day of a two-day tournament at Hornet Beach with a pair of losses to Boise State and Santa Clara.
The Hornets are hosting a four-team tournament that includes Boise State, San Jose State and Santa Clara.
The Hornets, still unable to field five doubles teams because of injuries, had to forfeit the No. 5 match in both contests. Sacramento State has now had to forfeit at No. 5 in 14 consecutive matches due to injuries.
Boise State ended the day 2-0 after defeating the Hornets, 5-0, and Santa Clara, 4-1. The Broncos finished with a split 1-1 after defeating the Hornets, 4-1, and losing to Boise State. The three teams will be in action again tomorrow, as well as San Jose State.
While Boise State beat the Hornets, there were a number of close matches. That included the No.2 duo of Macey Hayden/Kalani Hayes falling three sets (18-21, 15-21, 8-15). The Hornets will play Boise State again tomorrow at 10 a.m.
Against Santa Clara, the No. 3 pair of McKenna Smith/Ashtin Olin who their match (21-11, 21-15), to give the Hornets their lone win in the match. Smith/Olin are now 7-3 this season, the best record of any Sacramento State doubles team.
The Hornets will play two more matches tomorrow at 10 a.m. against Boise State, and 2 p.m. vs. San Jose State. This will be the second time the Hornets face San Jose this season as the two teams played on March 19.
