SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Sacramento State split a pair of beach volleyball matches on the finale of a two-day tournament hosted by San Jose State at Spartan Beach.
Sacramento State defeated San Francisco, 3-2, in the early match, before falling to host San Jose State, 5-0, later in the day.
Currently, the Hornets do not have enough healthy bodies to field five doubles teams. Because of this, Sacramento State had to forfeit at No. 5 doubles in both matches today, and both matches yesterday. Despite that, the Hornets were still able to gain the split this afternoon.
The Hornets (3-4 overall) opened the tournament yesterday with narrow losses to Saint Mary's and Oregon.
Of Sacramento State's three wins this season, two have come against San Francisco, including a 3-2 home win on March 5.
In today's win over USF, the Hornets were quickly down, 2-0, before running of three straight wins to earn the 3-2 victory. Sacramento State got wins from Macey Hayden/Kalani Hayes (21-19, 21-18 at No. 1), Caitlin Volkmann/Bridgette Smith (21-13, 21-9 at No. 2), and McKenna Smith/Ashtin Olin (21-15, 21-12 at No. 3).
Sacramento State will return to action for next weekend's Big West Conference Challenge in Long Beach on March 25-26. The Hornets will play six times over two days, beginning with Friday matchups vs. CSU Bakersfield, Cal Poly and CSUN.
