SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Sacramento State dropped a pair of matches on the first leg of a two-day tournament hosted by San Jose State at Spartan Beach. The Hornets opened the day with a 4-1 loss to Saint Mary's, before falling, 3-2, against Oregon.
Currently, the Hornets do not have enough healthy bodies to field five doubles teams. Because of this, Sacramento State had to forfeit at No. 5 doubles in both matches today. Despite trailing, 1-0, before the match even started, the Hornets kept things close against both opponents, which includes earning two points against an Oregon team that is now 6-2.
The losses dropped the Hornets to 2-3. Saint Mary's is now 7-4, and has defeated the Hornets twice this season.
The No. 4 doubles team of Caty Cordano and Karlee Soderberg won both their matches today despite moving up from their usual spot at No. 5. That included a 21-17, 21-14 win against Oregon, and 18-21, 21-12, 15-12 vs. Saint Mary's. The duo has now won three straight matches.
Ashtin Olin and McKenna Smith went 1-1 today, and are now 4-1 this season. The tandem, which has played at No. 3 in all five matches this year, beat their opponent from Oregon in quick fashion (21-16, 21-13).
Macey Hayden/Kalani Hayes played at No. 1 in both matches today, and Caitlin Volkmann/Bridgette Smith played at No. 2.
The Hornets conclude the two-day, four-match tournament tomorrow against San Francisco at noon and San Jose State at 3 p.m.
