FULLERTON, Calif. -- Cal State Fullerton erased a three-point halftime deficit with a big second half on the way to a 59-49 win over Sacramento State on Wednesday evening at Titan Gym.
The loss snapped the Hornets' three-game winning streak, and dropped the team to 6-6. Cal State Fullerton, which won the Big West Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament a season ago, improved to 6-6.
Tonight marked the final non-conference road game of the season, as Sacramento State will play at home on Dec. 28, before opening Big Sky Conference play at home vs. Portland State on New Year's Eve.
Both teams played stout defense throughout as Sacramento State was limited to 37% shooting while Cal State Fullerton shot 38%. The Hornets' 49 points were a season low.
After Sacramento State entered the break with a 27-24 lead, the Titans outscored the Hornets, 35-22, in the second half. That included a 20-4 run that spanned 10 minutes of game clock and allowed Fullerton to take control.
The Hornets sit at 6-6 despite a schedule that has included just three home games. The Hornets will play four of their next six inside the Nest.
Sacramento State held a commanding 37-28 advantage in the rebounding department, but the Titans outscored the Hornets in points off turnovers (15-5) and fast break points (10-0). In addition, the Titans were 15-of-21 from the free throw line compared to 7-of-8 for Sacramento State. The Titans were whistled for just 11 fouls the entire contest.
Two Hornets scored in double figures, led by
Akol Mawein's team-best 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field and 2-of-5 from distance. He also had seven rebounds (four offensive) in 34 minutes. Center
Callum McRae posted his fourth double-double with 10 points and a season-high tying 14 rebounds (four offensive).
McRae is just nine points shy of becoming the fourth New Zealand native to score 1,000 points at the Div. I level.
Zach Chappell had nine points and three rebounds,
Austin Patterson six points, two assists and two steals, and
Gianni Hunt two points, five rebounds and two assists.
Cameron Wilbon added five points, three rebounds and four assists, and
Hunter Marks finished with three points.
The Hornets return to action next Wednesday, Dec. 28, when they host Stanislaus State at 6 p.m.
