Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MEN’S BASKETBALL CAN’T OVERCOME HAWAII’S HOT SHOOTING IN NORTH SHORE CLASSIC LOSS

Laie, OAHU -- Hawaii shot 60% (33-55) from the field and 50% (7-14) from the 3-point line on the way to a 74-61 win over Sacramento State in the first round of the North Shore Classic on Friday afternoon at Cannon Activities Center.

The North Shore Classic, which is being sponsored by the Brooklyn Nets' Patty Mills, is a two-day, four-team event being played at BYU-Hawaii in Oahu. Sacramento State (3-3) will play the loser of Southern Utah/Texas State tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. PST. Southern Utah and Texas State are playing this evening in the second game of the tournament.

The Rainbow Warriors (4-1) got off to an incredible start, shooting a ridiculous 74% (20-27) in the first half, including 4-of-5 from distance. That propelled Hawaii to a 44-30 halftime lead. In a game that saw the Warriors lead for 39 minutes, Sacramento State would get no closer than 11 points of the Hawaii lead in the second half. The Warriors did cool off late in the second half when they went the final four minutes of the contest without a point.

The Hornets shot well from the field (47%), but were not up to par defensively, which included Hawaii turning the ball over just seven times. Sacramento State shot 24% (4-17) from the 3-point line compared to 59% (20-34) from inside the arc. The Hornets and Warriors both had the same amount of rebounds, and 10 of the Hornets' 26 boards were on the offensive glass.

Defense has been a concern for the Hornets over the last two games as UC Davis scored 49 points in the second half on Tuesday night, followed by the Warriors' 44 points in the first half this evening.

All 12 healthy Sacramento State players appeared in today's game, and seven scored six points or more. That included Cameron Wilbon's team-high 12 points. He was joined in double figures by center Callum McRae who had 11 points and eight rebounds. Of the Hornets' six games this season, McRae has posted double figures in points and/or rebounds in five of those contests.

Hunter Marks had nine points, Zach Chappell and Gianni Hunt both had seven points, and Akol Mawein posted six points and nine rebounds. Three of those boards came on the offensive glass. Austin Patterson scored seven points on 3-for-4 shooting, and 1-of-2 from distance. Marks, Patterson, Hunt and Chappell all hit a 3-pointer.

Quadry Adams added two points, and Teiano Hardee had a blocked shot.

After being outscored in the first half, 44-30, the Hornets held a 31-30 edge in the second half.

Tomorrow night's game will mark the third straight for the Hornets on a neutral floor, including Tuesday game at the downtown Golden1 Center.
