LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Sacramento State buried 14 3-pointers, and first-year head coach
David Patrick won his first game with the Hornets on the way to a 65-55 road win at UC San Diego on Saturday evening at LionTree Arena.
The victory was the first in the
David Patrick era, as he took over the head coaching reigns at Sacramento State on April 5. The Hornets improved to 1-1 on their season-opening three-game road trip, which included a loss on Monday night to seventh-ranked UCLA.
UC San Diego, which is a member of the Big West Conference, dropped to 0-2 on the young season. The Hornets were able to avenge a 15-point home loss to the Tritons a year ago.
All but five of the Hornets' field goal makes this evening were from beyond the 3-point line as the team went 14-for-25 (56%) from distance. That included eight triples in the first half, and six more after halftime. Of Sacramento State's 19 made baskets, only five came from inside the 3-point line.
Sacramento State, which led for nearly 34 minutes of game clock, held a five point halftime lead and scored the first five points of the second half to go up, 34-24, at the 17:40 mark. The Tritons got would get no closer than five points of that deficit the rest of the way as the Hornets led by double figures the final seven minutes.
Five different Hornets striped multiple 3-balls, including guard
Zach Chappell who scored a game-high 19 points on 6-for-9 shooting, and 5-of-6 from distance. The five 3-pointers tied his career high. It was Chappell's 3-pointer with 3:30 left that was the dagger and put the Hornets up 15 points (59-44). Chappell also had five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Sacramento State had 17 assists (and just 11 turnovers) on its 19 made buckets. The team shot 40% overall (19-47) from the field and 68% (13-19) from the free throw line. Each of the Hornets' final seven points spanning the last 2:34 were from the free throw line.
The 14 3-balls were just three shy of the program's Div. I era single-game record.
Austin Patterson had 10 points (3-for-4 3PT),
Cameron Wilbon nine points (2-for-3 from 3PT),
Gianni Hunt seven points (2-of-6 from 3PT) and
Hunter Marks six points (2-for-4 from 3PT). Wilbon added nine rebounds (four offensive) to go with his nine points, and Hunt had a game-high five assists.
Forward
Akol Mawein finished with 12 points, five rebounds and drew six fouls, and center
Callum McRae made his presence felt with six rebounds, four assists and a game-high +19 in plus/minus.
The Hornets outrebounded UC San Diego, 36-34, and limited the Tritons to 38% shooting from the field, and 12% (2-16) from beyond the arc. Thirty-two of UCSD's 55 points came inside the paint.
Sacramento State returns to action on Monday as the Hornets conclude the road trip at Denver. Tip is 6 p.m. PT. The Pioneers are off to a 2-0 start which includes home wins over Idaho and non-Div. I Colorado College. That is the first of two games the Hornets will play next week, which includes hosting UC Merced in the home opener on Friday at noon.
