VOLLEYBALL BEATS CSUN, 3-1, IN FINAL NON-CONFERENCE TUNEUP

Box Score

RENO, Nev. -- In its final non-conference tuneup, Sacramento State downed CSUN, 3-1 (25-13, 11-25, 25-15, 25-21), in the second round of the Nevada Classic on Friday afternoon at Virginia Street Gym.

The Hornets, who were playing their final match of the tournament, concluded the three-day event with a 1-1 record. Sacramento State opened the tourney yesterday with a loss to Nevada, and will not play tomorrow during the event's final day. The Hornets conclude the non-league portion of the schedule with a 5-5 record, and will open Big Sky Conference play next week with road matches at Idaho State and Weber State.

The win was the second in eight days over CSUN, as the Hornets swept the Matadors (1-7) last Friday at home. During the non-league portion of the schedule, the Hornets played teams from the WCC, Big West, Mountain West and SEC conferences.

In this afternoon's win, the Hornets limited CSUN to a .167 hitting percentage as the Matadors hit below .100 in each of the victorious sets for Sacramento State. None of the four sets were all that close. The Hornets jumped out to an 18-10 lead in the fourth, and never led by anything less than three points.

Sacramento State was led by outside hitter Caitlin Volkmann's match-high 14 kills and career-best .480 hitting percentage. The sophomore had just two errors in 25 swings. Fellow outside hitter Bridgette Smith also had double digits in kills as she finished with 10 kills, nine digs and an ace. No other Hornet finished with more than five kills.

Middle blocker Kalani Hayes had five kills and four blocks, and fellow middle Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin had four kills, three blocks and a .333 hitting percentage. Setter McKenna Smith posted two kills, 27 assists, five digs and a block, and libero Caty Cordano led the team with 10 digs. Michelle Taynton had three aces and five digs. Those three aces came on three consecutive points early in the first set.

Both Volkmann and Kamba-Griffin were named to the all-tournament team.

Nicole Nevarez had 13 kills for CSUN, but hit just .054.

Sacramento State opens Big Sky play next week on Thursday at Idaho State (6 p.m. PDT) and Saturday at Weber State (1 p.m. PDT).
